RMD Consulting modernizes historical nightlife venue The Rail, without sacrificing its history and story.

The years of history, props, and decorations in storage would surely tell the story of San Diego’s famous nightlife venue, The Brass Rail. This venue has entertained nightlife goers in the Hillcrest neighborhood since the early 1960s. As Hillcrest has evolved with new restaurant, bar, and nightlife choices like many entertainment districts in the U.S., the owners of The Brass Rail knew it was time to renovate and re-launch the venue with new offerings. Their goal was to modernize the venue while still reflecting much of the building’s prohibition history and story through the new renovation and rebrand. Additionally, they focused on adding a new kitchen and menu while opening the walls to the street to incorporate day part hours of operation to better compete in the marketplace.
Brass Rail hired RMD Consulting to help evaluate the current space, create an action plan and budget for the renovation, and devise a more functional space to generate revenue while executing both day and night parts. The RMD Consulting team meticulously itemized the entire venue from roof to basement, to determine the most actionable and critical areas for improvement. Several brainstorms and weekly advisement led to a full plan that included ceiling rise and leveling to expose the existing beam work, removal of the second floor attic and storage, replacement of the outside wall with large sliders to the existing patio, streamlining of the venue’s various elevations, bar extension and re-design, new building infrastructure including HVAC upgrades, and a more inviting and open entrance.

Revenues have continued to increase since the renovation was complete. The Rail has climbed back to the top of the nightlife game in Hillcrest, as well has hosting new and exciting Happy Hour promotions and weekend day parties.
